On Monday, July 22, 2024, the activities of the national workshop on “Strategic Solutions to Desertification” were launched in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. The first day of this workshop was marked by the organization of a celebration on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, under the chairmanship of the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources. It was attended, in addition to a delegation from the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, by representatives of the United Nations Development Program, the European Union, and various national bodies working in the field of combating desertification, whether governmental or civil society.

During this celebration, four speeches were delivered, one by the Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Desertification in Libya, the representative of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, the representative of the United Nations Development Program, and a speech on behalf of His Excellency the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, delivered on his behalf by the Head of his Office.

In his speech on this occasion, the organization’s representative reviewed its efforts in supporting its member states and supporting them in implementing the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. He also introduced the current strategic frameworks for the organization’s work.

After that, the participants watched a presentation on the Green Belt Initiative for the western and southern regions of Libya and another presentation on the cultivation of plants that can constitute an alternative source of energy, in addition to presenting models of the pioneering projects of the United Nations Development Program in the field of combating desertification in some of the countries in which it intervenes.

During the third day of the workshop, the organization will organize training for the Libyan team concerned with preparing the national drought plan in Libya.
