The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) inaugurated a training course in the field of the methods of establishing geographical indications for agricultural products in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries and the Mediterranean Agricultural Technological Institute in Algeria, during the period 24th to the 28th of November 2019. The participants were 25 trainees from the cadres of the ministry.
The course dealt with several topics related to defining the concept of geographical indications for agricultural products, introducing the system and methods of recognition, recording geographical indications, designations of origin, institutional framework & coding systems for agricultural products in Algeria, and the effective cycle of quality associated with origin. In addition, the definition of the relationship between geographical indications and World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements, and the role of geographical indicators in the protection of traditional knowledge in the agricultural products market, besides introducing the two models of coding projects during the workshop to be trained on how to apply the quality tools reviewed in the course in both projects.
It is worth mentioning that the course was inaugurated by the head of the regional office in the Maghreb region in the presence of the director of the agricultural departments of the province of Tizi Ouzou, along with the representative of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries and the director of the Technological Institute of Mediterranean Agriculture in Algeria.
