The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) participated in the second session of the Open-ended International Working Group on the Path of the New International Covenant on the Environment, in Nairobi, Kenya during 19-22 May 2019 at the invitation of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
This group was established by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 72/277, entitled "Towards a Global Compact for the Environment", as well as the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations entitled "Gaps in international environmental law and environment-related instruments for the development of a Global Environment Charter.
AOAD representative stressed the positions expressed by the participating Arab countries; focusing on the outcome of these discussions must take into account a number of fundamental issues including:
-The principle of the national sovereignty of countries over their environment
- The principle of shared and differentiated responsibility, which is one of the pillars of international environmental law
- Emphasizing these principles and their main role in achieving the sustainable development goals
It is fortunate that this meeting coincides with the completion of the procedures for the allocation of a special seat for AOAD at the United Nations Environment Program, in accordance with the agreement signed between H.E the Director General AOAD and the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program in Nairobi on the 4th of December 2017.
AOAD participated in previous meetings of the United Nations Environment through the seat of the Secretariat of the League of Arab States.
