The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development contributes in the Framework Strategy for Eradicating Date Palm Weevil


On the 9th of March 2019 the Conference of Agricultural Ministers of Date Palm Producing and Processing Countries was concluded. The conference was organized by the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation in collaboration with the Emirates Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The conference developed a framework strategy for the eradication of the red palm weevil, in addition to endorsing the establishment of a credit fund to finance its implementation.

The conference was held under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority. H.E Ms. Mariam Mohammed Al Mehairi, Minister of State for Food Security in the UAE, inaugurated the conference, on behalf of H.H Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Chairman of Board of Trustees of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation.

The Conference came out with several recommendations. The participants (producers and manufacturers of date palms) welcomed the proposed strategy which focused on supporting scientific research to combat date palm weevil, capacity building, transfer of knowledge and technology. The countries also stressed the importance of cooperation and concerted efforts to support and activate the regional platform to achieve the strategic objectives. The participants also stressed the importance of using safe and environmentally safe methods of control and recommended that the participating countries should meet by the end of 2020 to evaluate the recommendations made.

 The Director-General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) H.E Prof. Ibrahim Adam El Dukheri, praised the efforts made by the Arab countries, the of Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Higher Institute for Mediterranean Studies and the International Center for Agriculture Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), for supporting Date Palm trees in the region, recognizing the negative effects of red date palm weevil on the palm tree and its impact on the national economy and food security. He also called to continue international, regional and Arab efforts to confront all pests and to build formulate and implement sustainable strategies for the development of the date sector.

The Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) H.E Dr. José Grazianuda Silva praised the efforts of the Member States and organizations which attended this Conference and the meetings held at FAO headquarters in Rome. Moreover, he pointed out the agreement of the Member States to develop a framework strategy to eliminate red palm weevil.

It is worth mentioning that AOAD has contributed one hundred thousand US dollars to implement capacity building and knowledge sharing components in the date palm sector.
