The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development consultative meeting with the palm experts in the Arab region


The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) held a meeting on the 4th of November 2019 in Cairo, with palm experts in the Arab region, to discuss the four priority projects for developing the palm sector in the Arab region, namely the conservation of genetic resources, the development of palm incubators approved in the Arab countries, integrated management pests and major palm diseases in the Arab countries, in addition to the promotion and marketing through enhancing the competitiveness of palm production in the Arab countries and achieving sustainable methodological development of the date palm value chain throughout innovative platforms in the Arab countries.

AOAD Director General HE Prof. Ibrahim Adam El Dukheri, stressed that the date and palm sector is of great economic and social importance for its contribution to achieving sustainable agricultural and rural development. He pointed out the importance of research and development to increase productivity and quality, support the promotion of dates, maintain investments and benefit from smart agriculture techniques, interest in training and raising capacity and activate the role of the private sector and work on the development of the palm and dates sector moreover support the projects to control the red palm weevil.

He added that the establishment of the International Dates Council in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other relevant organizations will help in the preparation and implementation of collective programs that will achieve sustainable development of dates globally and regionally.

It is worth mentioning that the meeting was attended by FAO and representatives of the private and public sector and the participation of more than 35 experts working in the date palm sector.
